Cartographia Imperialis is a 3D map of the Warhammer 40K Milky Way that you can view right in your browser. It’s always nice to find something cool, entertaining, and free on the internet. It’s as simple as the version featured in Mass Effect and as impressive as it is majestic. You can explore it like an isometric game: drag with the left mouse button to move the view, use the right mouse button to rotate the camera, and use the mouse wheel to zoom in and out. Click on notable planets or regions to read brief background information about them or look them up by name in the index to jump directly to that location on the map.

We don’t know where creator Sami Gashi sourced the text, but we like its characteristic style of the universe. Take, for example, the description of Jouran, a largely insignificant hive world: “Its dossier is a reminder that strategic maps hide ordinary misery behind a clean point of light. Jouran’s value lies in quotas met, bodies counted, and local authorities willing to preserve output by any sanctioned means.”

The best part is that Cartographia Imperialis is free and ad-free. What’s more, the map requires few resources despite its graphical quality and the current state of the internet. It loads incredibly fast, and we didn’t experience any slowdowns while clicking around. The only thing missing is a reference to the Koronus Expanse from Rogue Trader. However, that seems like a nitpicky complaint considering how cool and free this thing is. The creator, Gashi, has set up a Ko-Fi page if you’d like to support him. He’s indicated that he’d like to create interactive maps for other fictional worlds, and we’d love to see his interpretations of other settings.
