Although Rockstar and Take-Two won’t release Grand Theft Auto V for Nintendo’s previous-generation hardware, there’s still a solution.

Ahead of the release of Grand Theft Auto VI, Rockstar Games sold more than 200 million copies of Grand Theft Auto V, which is available on virtually every platform today except the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. Previously, modders had made the game playable on this console, but a new project has taken it one step further. Grand Theft Auto V now has its own unofficial port for the Nintendo Switch. Unlike the previous mod, this version runs natively on the Nintendo Switch. Paralympics Productions developed the port by recompiling it following the 2023 source code leak.

Gameplay footage shows that Grand Theft Auto V runs at 10–25 frames per second (FPS) on the Nintendo Switch’s base hardware configuration. This explains why Rockstar Games never sought to release an official version of the game. Things get more interesting, though, when we throw overclocking into the mix. An overclocked Switch OLED can consistently reach 30 FPS, though performance may still dip depending on the scene and the number of non-player characters (NPCs). Ultimately, the performance is more comparable to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions than to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One ports.

Although Grand Theft Auto V was never officially released on the Nintendo Switch, fans can certainly expect the game to be released on the Nintendo Switch 2 at some point. Many are looking forward to the release of Red Dead Redemption 2 on the Nintendo Switch 2. Of course, this all depends on whether Switch 2 sales remain strong. Still, it’s rare to see Rockstar games on Big N’s recently released hardware. Especially with the most recent games…
