MOVIE REVIEW – Indeed, „shocking” is the best word to describe the latest Marvel superhero movie, which brings together on the screen almost every one of them against Thanos, arch-evil of the franchise. Still, while the story is „shockingly” simply, we can use the same adjective about the epic scenes and visuals, which are some of the best in the franchise.
Ten years to get here? Was it worth waiting for so long? This is our review of the Avengers Infinity War movie, the 19th film in the Marvel film saga that comes out ten years after Iron Man, the first installment of the saga.
Thanos is not joking
The pitch: an alien with purple skin named Thanos wants to get his hands on stones supposed to give him unlimited power. His goal is simple: thanks to these gems, he simply wants to eradicate a good part of the universe. He, therefore, goes in search of these precious Stones of Infinity and does not make neighborhood when anyone is in his way.
However, then, what will happen to the powerful superheroes Thor, Avengers or Guardians of the Galaxy? Do they have the slightest chance of blocking him or are they condemned to suffer the wrath of Thanos, who seeks only death and destruction and who is nicknamed the mad Titan?
Six reasons to see (or not) Avengers Infinity War
It has been ten years since the Marvel Studios began installing their universe populated by superheroes in theaters. Ten years that their stories make us vibrate. Ten years in which Iron Man, Captain America and the Guardians of the Galaxy have been fighting back hordes of super villains or clashing with each other. 10 years when we ended up attaching to some and hating them too. However, now all good things have an end, Marvel Studios, under the leadership of their president Kevin Feige, have decided to give a great sweep and radically change this world of superheroes.
Avengers Infinity War is, therefore, the culmination of the past ten years, the film that should lead to very big changes in the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe). On paper, the initiative seems very enticing, but what about on the big screen? Should we really see this 19th Marvel movie or is it dispensable? Here is our review of the movie 100% guarantee no spoiler. We paid much attention, it is promised!
1 – Yes, because we are out of breath from the first minutes…
Do you think you have seen everything about superhero movies? Get ready, because Avengers Infinity Wars should book you some more (good?) surprises. From the introductory scene, we say “No, it is not possible, they did not dare? “… and yes, they did it.
Moreover, the movie keeps bouncing from rebound to rebound. If some scenes are finally quite agreed and meetings between the superheroes sometimes cascaded (obviously, it is necessary that all this small world meet), many situations are totally unexpected. A real effort has been made on the screenplay, which is not a pale copy of a saga of comics. Moreover, the end is even grander!
2 – Yes, because it fights in all directions, but not only that…
Like any self-respecting superhero movie, Infinity War is no exception to the rule: action scenes are numerous, superheroes and supervillains using their powers at arm’s length. However, it is not only that, since our heroes are also trying to pick up the pieces after the setbacks they experienced in Civil War.
Without ever falling into cheap morality (a reproach we had made against Black Panther), the film knows how to alternate armored sequences of adrenaline and calmer sequences, more removed and taking advantage of dialogues that are varied from funny to dramatic.
3 – Yes, because everyone is benefiting
If Captain America Civil War was a little too much Tony Stark and Steve Rogers and eclipsed too many other superheroes, the shot is completely rectified in this new album. While the two characters remain essential to the plot, they are not alone in control.
Each superhero plays an essential role, and characters like Wong (yes yes, the butler of the Doctor Strange) or Scarlet Witch (finally!) In short, if you prefer this or that superhero, and you hate another, you should not be disappointed since each character plays an important role in the film, and that the two directors did not give them 5 minutes of appearance on the screen for no reason. The scenes do not “pile up,” they find a real justification about others.
4 – Yes, because Marvel has found a new, solid super-villain
Given the first trailers, the super-villain Thanos has something to do with marble. A very purple character embodied by Josh Brolin, computer graphics, who holds the hand of Gamora child … Not enough to cry genius, especially when you know the power and evil spirit of the comic character. In the end, we had to wait a few years before finally seeing the madness of Thanos raging on the Marvel superheroes, but it was worth it. Recall that the character was introduced in the 2012 movie Avengers, but that he played a very small role.
Since then, Thanos’ plans have been put into place (we know what he is running after and why), just like the universe of super-heroes has grown, thanks to Guardians of the Galaxy, Doctor Strange, and Spider-Man. Moreover, it is through the various confrontations he engages with the superheroes that he shows all his power and perverse spirit. However, make no mistake: if Thanos is so bad, it is because he has a good reason (well, a reason he considers good). The character gains credibility, and rather than seeing his reign on his throne as in the previous installments of Marvel films, he wets the shirt and shows a fierce will. In short, here is a character who is not a junk villain and who can go directly to the pantheon of supervillains who have marked the history of cinema.
5 – No, because we expected to see other characters
Those who hope to see in this opus completely new characters will perhaps be a little disappointed. Certainly, there are members of the Black Order, but we quickly realize that they do not represent a threat that terrible and that the real villain of the story, the one who will give so much wire to bother our heroes, it is indeed Thanos, and nobody else.
We may also regret that apart from the members of the Black Order, there are hardly new heads. Marvel obviously prefers to introduce each new character into a movie that is entirely dedicated to him, rather than inducting him as Spider-Man or Black Panther in a super-heroic “meeting” (both characters first appeared in Captain Civil War). ).
6 – Yes and no, because it would have been necessary to make two films rather than
If the film does not drag in length, we could nevertheless emit a small reservation about it: it is too long. As a result, one wonders why the Marvel Studios have not opted for a Harry Potter VII approach, which was split into two separate parts with a good big cliffhanger at the end of the first part.
Because the film Avengers 4 that will be released in 2019 will not be a direct result of it: it will not be Infinity War part 2 (when it was originally planned), but of another opus, even if we expect that the story started in this part extends into Avengers 4. However, do not sulk our pleasure so far, because the brothers Russo deliver us here great cinema and a film of superheroes which masterfully revives the machine.
Verdict
While superhero films tend to run out of steam for lack of originality, here comes Avengers Infinity War, which has just completed the MCU’s 10-year history. So yes, there will be a sequel, but this film is justified to itself, and we are full of joy. Inventive, well-paced, sometimes funny (but not too much, it would be useless and unwelcome), this feature has the potential to conquer the crowds. Attention nevertheless: it is almost imperative to have seen (almost) all the other opus of films Marvel in the cinema.
