Street Fighter V – The roundhouse kick of Unreal Engine 4?

Capcom’s had their run: first, Street Fighter V’s trailer ended up being leaked, which made them officially announce the game (which got more info since then), and then it was topped off with their latest and last addition to SF IV, the free Omega DLC… but the sequel is well on its way.

There’s something that will definitely stay more of the same: as with IV, III and II, first we will see a vanilla release of Street Fighter V, which will start to get additional upgraded versions as time goes by. It’s basically a tradition since the nineties, back when there were no DLCs and no widespread access to the Internet, even back then there were several versions of SF II!

UE4?

When Namco Bandai announced that the series finale Tekken 7 will use Unreal Engine 4, I was a bit surprised. Will they seriously just license Epic’s engine instead of creating one on their own?
…but when the recently (it was like an hour ago when this newspiece hit the web!) surfaced piece of information struck me, I couldn’t really believe what I saw: Street Fighter V will also take use of UE4! There’s just one thought in my head, when I tie these two dots together: the so far, basically murdered-in-action Tekken X Street Fighter – isn’t it logical? The two series’ most recent episode will be built off from the same engine, which can make the crossover much more easy to develop and create…

The official reason was to create the best gameplay using the latest technology. This would be all fine and dandy, but there’s a question: how much will be Capcom able to customize the engine to their own liking? This might be a problem: using your own engine, it is way easier to avoid or fix compatibility or any other errors, which can’t be said about when using someone else’s creation. We’ll see, it’s an interesting idea though.

Not for Xbox?

The game was shown on the PlayStation Experience (and it was a bigger hit than Square Enix’s FF VII announcement, which I better not talk about any more), and there is a reason for that: Street Fighter V will be available exclusively to the PlayStation 4 and the PC, and not for Xbox One! Although don’t forget, it might be just a timed exclusive, because I can’t even imagine seeing Super Street Fighter V (which will be almost 100% certainly happening!) not available for Xbox…

Different than others

From the gameplay it shows that it will be slightly different than the previous titles. Compared to IV, V looks a bit more serious, resembling II for some reason. It’s a good omen.

Which was interesting to see was the stance that Chun-Li and Ryu were using, which took away some of their EX bars: possibly stronger movements in bound. The other addition is the Revenge bar, which makes the Ultra combos return. And it’s just the surface, we haven’t seen the entire iceberg yet.

The game looks a bit more action oriented and faster, as it seems to go back in time while keeping modern elements. We’ll see next year how it ends up. Is PlayStation really the home for Street Fighter as the UK PS boss said?

-V-

Reasons to look out for it:

+ A much more serious look
+ Revenge bar
+ UE4: not used yet

Not sure about:

– Several versions again…
– What can Unreal Engine 4 really do?
– Ultra SF IV comes to PS4 as well
