At this point, we’re not sure if it’s the developer team that does it – it might be the publisher, Warner itself…
On Reddit, someone did the math and counted how much a player would spend on the game to acquire every skin via microtransactions. The final result is 6440 dollars. Just for the skins, you’d have to pay a fortune to get them all.
Each character (23 at the moment) has 60 skins. That means there are 1380 skins total. However, you can unlock four per character by completing their tutorial, their story, and their basic towers. That means it’s 56 x 23 = 1288 skins, and one skin costs five dollars, pushing the tally to 6440 bucks. With grinding (which, with the harder towers, is obligatory, as NetherRealm has made them humanly impossible to make us consider spending money instead… déjavu?), it would take a ridiculous time to get them all.
Sure, you could say that we could spend one of the seven (yes, seven…) currencies, the Time Krystals, on skins. One skin costs 500, but wait, let’s add the factor that the game rotates the skins every 6-8 hours, which is another NetherRealm/Warner move to make us spend more and more cash or you might miss the skin. The post says that they got 760 crystals in four hours of gameplay. You’d need 644 thousand Time Krystals to get all skins, and to get them by gameplay, you’d need 3390 dollars. Without stopping, that is over twenty weeks!
And that’s not all. Fatality, brutality moves? Gear? One-time consumable items (to refill HP for example)? They aren’t even included, and neither were the DLC skins either. So it means the monetization can crush the game once again, especially how four years ago, with Mortal Kombat X, you could spend 40 dollars on DLC characters, brutality moves, and a way to easily perform fatality moves…
So after all this, we can hardly believe David Haddad, the president of Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. He said at this year’s GamesBeat Summit, one day after the game’s launch, that Mortal Kombat 11 had the best launch in the Mortal Kombat franchise’s history. (Yeah, but let us not forget that 2015’s Mortal Kombat X initially launched on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One only, while this year, Mortal Kombat 11 also hit the PC and the Nintendo Switch simultaneously, too.) No exact numbers were disclosed, so him saying that „in the Americas, Mortal Kombat 11 is the largest launch in Warner Bros. Games’ history,” is also hard to believe. At least he added that NetherRealm has planned „years of content” for the game. The few characters that were found in the game code – we wrote about it a few days ago – could be a hint at it, too.
So, predatory microtransactions. Once again.
