id Software might be perhaps a tad too optimistic about the technology that will strive in the next gen, as it’s not that widely used on PC yet (for example, NVidia’s RTX 2070 or 2080 supports it), and on consoles, we have heard confirmation from both Sony and Microsoft that their respective next-gen platform will have hardware support for the real-time raytracing, and these consoles won’t launch until the end of 2020.
id Software’s Marty Stratton said in the video below that id Tech 7, the newest engine of the team that was revolutionary in the past with games such as Wolfenstein 3D, Doom or Quake, will support the real-time raytracing, and thus, DOOM: Eternal will also have this visual effect. So far so good, but Stratton added that „we’ll do it better than everybody.” That’s a little too… bold?
We have heard from Bethesda that they are working together with NVidia to bring real-time raytracing to id Tech 6 games, such as Wolfenstein: Youngblood (which will also have microtransactions…). They might be having the same deal for id Tech 7 as well with the GPU manufacturing company.
The DOOM Slayer, the protagonist from the 2016 reboot, will return on November 22 (on a Friday), as DOOM: Eternal will launch on this day on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC, but we already learned that the FPS is also heading towards the Google Stadia and the Nintendo Switch, too. Since the team’s goal is stable performance on every platform, they’ll have a lot to do, but the id Tech 6 engine was pretty good performance-wise.
Get your guns ready for the late November launch, as there will be a few thousand demons that will have to be killed. Cue the heavy metal soundtrack.
