Some features of the PS4 console regarding PlayStation 4 Facebook integration will be reduced after this change.

Sony has announced through the official PlayStation support page the end of PlayStation 4 Facebook integration, effective today. Previously, PS4 users who linked the accounts of both platforms could share certain content on the social network directly from the console, including game captures, messages when unlocking achievements or even importing friends.

Unfortunately, neither Sony nor Facebook have explained what reasons exist behind this decision, and it is not clear that it will return in the future, perhaps with the arrival of PS5. It is possible that this outcome was long agreed, in fact.

Sony did not offer an explanation for the removal of Facebook integration on PS4, but Polyon reached out to the company for more information. In 2018, Facebook said that it was restricting how third-party companies could use its members data, and specifically named two partners, Sony and Microsoft, as companies that accessed some Facebook data, as a result of a software bug, even after Facebook had shut down certain integrations.

A spokesperson for Facebook also provided the following statement:

“We’re working with Sony to finalize an updated contract designed to improve the Facebook integration on PlayStation. While these discussions are in progress, Facebook features will not be available on PlayStation 4. We hope to bring these features back as soon as our teams reach an agreement.”

The end of third-party support is one of the most common symptoms when the end of a generational cycle comes, so we hope to have more news of the style in the coming months and years. Meanwhile, Sony continues to release updates for its desktop console. Without going any further, you can now download firmware version 7.00, which among other things expands the capacity of chat groups.
