A PlayStation 5 will happen. A new, stronger PlayStation VR headset for it will also arrive.
Let’s Go Digital found the patent that Sony has filed for a „data processing device.0 The patent itself isn’t directly discussing a new PlayStation VR, but the images make us strongly believe that the company is talking about the PSVR 2 (if they stuck with numbers for two-and-a-half decades, why stop it now…?).
A few images show a headset that has a similar design to the original PlayStation VR (while others show a different one – the PDF linked above has a few interesting things), which makes sense… but the front of the device has two cameras, while a third one is placed on the back, on the head ring. There’s also a motion controller, which looks more like a burning candle or a lighter, and not like a new PlayStation Move controller. Then, Sony describes in the patent that a camera is attached to a console, which is what the PlayStation Camera does with a PlayStation 4 (regardless if it’s the original, the PlayStation 4 Slim, or the PlayStation 4 Pro).
Sony might be combining two types of sensors (inside-out, outside-in tracking), which would be a first for a VR headset, as the Oculus Rift S and the Oculus Quest has cameras on the headset, while the Valve Index uses external base stations. Of course, Sony might end up using just one of the sensor types, and they just file patents just in case.
We have yet to see what the headset will have in its retail format. The PlayStation 5 will launch in late 2020, possibly close to the Xbox Project Scarlett. That’s when the wireless PlayStation VR 2 might also launch. The rumoured February console reveal might involve the new PSVR, too.
