At X019, we could finally see some gameplay of Age of Empires IV – the real-time strategy game will not try to ask a dollar to spawn a unit on your map at least. (That’d be extremely awful…)
„The idea of microtransactions in a real-time strategy game isn’t a thing. DLC, expansions – all of that is things that we’re going to be exploring for Age [of Empires] IV. While we definitely already have ideas in terms of where we want to go past Age of Empires IV, in terms of expansions and stuff, a lot of that is going to be driven by the community and the players, where they want to see the game going… but we want to have those conversations with the community, to figure out what we can add. What are the things they want to see in the game? Things like game modes,” Adam Isgreen, the creative director of Age of Empires, said. In other words: they will not end up expanding the game without asking for feedback by the players and the community, which is the best thing to do with such an old franchise. (And about microtransactions: is there even an RTS game that HAS microtransactions?)
Age of Empires IV is being developed by Relic Entertainment, and the X019 video is anything but gameplay. We wouldn’t necessarily call the one-minute video below gameplay footage. Sure, the development might not be in such a shape yet but come on, the game was announced more than two years ago! (It happened in August 2017, so… yeah, time flies, doesn’t it?)
Age of Empires IV still doesn’t have a release date yet. We might have to wait until E3 2020 when Microsoft might finally reveal when the RTS game will launch…
