Gabe Newell’s company denies the existence of Left 4 Dead 3, even though the person that brought the game up seems to be anything but unreliable…
The case originates from Alvin Wang Graylin. We haven’t known him until now, but we’ll remember him for life – he’s the president of HTC China. On Twitter, he shared four slides of his presentation that are about the 2020 VR trends. Let’s pull the handbrake here to look at one of them:
Take a look at the fourth bullet point. It says „HL Alyx/LFD3 will drive consumer and AAA studio interest.” Half-Life: Alyx has been announced two months ago, we don’t have an issue with that. But Left 4 Dead 3? Wow: either Alvin Wang Graylin is an insider (after all, Valve has collaborated with the company on the HTC Vive…), or he’s also guessing. If Left 4 Dead 3 is indeed in development, and it’s going to be a VR title, then we can say that Valve is putting everything in the virtual reality egg basket, as we haven’t even thought of Half-Life: Alyx to be a VR game. Of course, we have to mention that it isn’t official, but the source of the information makes the situation somewhat spicy.
However, Valve has responded to Alvin Wang Graylin’s tweet with a statement that we saw on IGN: „We’ve seen rumours to this effect for the last couple of months. We did briefly explore some Left 4 Dead next opportunities a few years ago. But we are not working on anything L4D related now, and haven’t for years. Some people are having fun creating misinformation to spin up the community and other outlets. Unfortunately, for now, a new L4D game is not something we’re working on.”
So Valve denies it all. They can’t seem to get anything done that has number three in it. Half-Life: Alyx is NOT Half-Life 3 (its plot is set between the first two games). And Graylin dug up something old…
