Crytek vs. Cloud Imperium Games: Another Twist In The Lawsuit

The lawsuit between Crytek and Cloud Imperium Games (shortened to CGI onwards) isn’t going to be put on hold.

Recently, Crytek requested from the court that the case against CIG should be paused until Squadron 42 launches. The German company believes that the game licence agreement for CryEngine (or its Amazon development fork, Lumberyard Engine) has been invalidated, as CIG doesn’t use the engine for one game but two. Squadron 42 is Star Citizen’s single-player spin-off, with which CIG has switched to Lumberyard. The former will have several stars in its cast, including Mark Hamill, while the latter is effectively going to be an MMO from Chris Roberts, the creator of Wing Commander. We’d also add that both Squadron 42 and Star Citizen shares the same launcher.

However, CIG has rolled the case forward on January 17. The court document can be read here. They want the lawsuit to be dismissed with prejudice. In other words, they wish to END the lawsuit with Crytek, calling their actions nothing more than „attention-seeking.” Let’s see what they wrote: „Crytek should not be allowed to aim its car at CIG’s storefront window, stomp the accelerator, smash through, do doughnuts for years, then back out and drive away to maybe circle around and crash CIG again another day. Crytek richly deserves having its keys taken away for all time so that CIG can conduct responsible business without further interference from Crytek or its series of lawyers.”

The document mentions that Crytek falsely claims that CIG did not switch to Lumberyard, but they did with Star Citizen. CIG also believes the German company is „pretending that “new information” came out in discovery about the timing of the future release of SQ42. Nothing about release timing for SQ42 has been shared with Crytek.”

CIG requests at least half a million dollars from Crytek, and they have to respond until February 7.
