PlayStation News: The PlayStation 4 Nears 110 Million; PlayStation 5 Reveal Shortly?

After Nintendo, Sony has also revealed new sales information about its console.

The company’s quarterly financial report says that by December 31, the PlayStation 4 has reached 108.9 million shipped units. In the October-December quarter (which we can call the Holiday season at this point), 6.1 million units were shipped, which is two million less year-on-year. The reduction is mainly because of people awaiting the PlayStation 5, plus many consumers already have a PS4 (it doesn’t matter if it’s the PlayStation 4 Slim or the PlayStation 4 Pro model), and Sony could only see a spike in its sales if they reduce the price.l

Sony hasn’t changed its forecast: they still expect to sell 13.5 million PlayStation 4s in the fiscal year from April 1, 2019, to March 31, 2020. 81.1 million software (game) sales happened in the previous quarter, which is another year-on-year drop from 87.2 million a year before. However, 49% of the 81.1 million sales were digital, meaning the PlayStation Network is getting more and more traction, as, in Q4 2018, only 37% of the sales were digital. The PlayStation Plus subscriber count is at 38.8 million, which is a 2.5 million growth in a year.

On Twitter, PSErebus (who seems to be an insider on PlayStation-related information) claims that the PlayStation 5 pre-orders will start on March 5. We have our doubts. In a November tweet, he said that Sony will reveal the PlayStation 5’s design and price at E3 2020. However, Sony has since confirmed to not participate in the event once again! So we can’t take this comment seriously for now. Perhaps we’ll get a PlayStation event in February. Maybe we won’t.

And a bit of joke to end with: PlayStation’s official Twitter account did not have a profile picture for a while, as it was infringing copyrights, making Twitter remove the picture.
