Surprising news indeed: in a sudden move Sony Online Entertainment announced today on their forum that they’ve been bought by investment management firm Columbus Nova. The company is now an independent game development studio and it even changed its name to Daybreak Game Company.
What’s important to gamers everywhere is that Daybreak Game Company will no longer focus on Sony products exclusively. The forum post says that Daybreak can produce content for Playstation, Xbox, mobile, and more. As for existing properties, they will continuing operating as normal.
Sony Online Entertainment released H1Z1 earlier this year to some mixed results, but we’ll have to see how this acquisition will affect upcoming projects (and what platforms they appear on).
