PlatinumGames also has its new Tokyo office to hire people, although they will likely not work on the first completely independent project that will be directed by Hideki Kamiya (Resident Evil 2, Viewtiful Joe, Okami, Bayonetta, The Wonderful 101).
Let’s see Kamiya’s message, which we truncated somewhat: „[…] In the fourteen years since we founded this company, we’ve worked towards the dream of making and releasing a game based on a Platinum intellectual property. Now, we’re finally stepping up to that starting line. […] We’ve made a wide variety of games throughout our history, sometimes based on existing properties, like NieR: Automata; sometimes wholly original stories, like Bayonetta and Astral Chain. […] All of our titles up until now have been made under contracts, with cooperation and funding from the publishers who distribute them. […]
As a creator, it’s hard not to think of my games as my children. After all, it takes a lot of hard work to raise them, and a lot of love, too. However, once they’re done, any choices about them are entirely out of my hands. So, for example, no matter how many times people tell me, “You should make a sequel to this game,” or, “I’d love to see it on that console,” there’s nothing I can do about it. Which brings us to Project G.G. (that’s just a working title, by the way). […] It’s going to be a 100 per cent PlatinumGames title. For everything from its setting and characters, to its game design and story, to how it’s promoted—PlatinumGames is in full control.
Of course, that has its downsides, too. We’ll be taking on new risks that we’ve never had to assume before as a contracted developer. Having full control over the Project G.G. IP gives us a ton of freedom, but also a ton of responsibility. Still, I think we can harness that sense of responsibility and turn it into motivation to make Project G.G. the best game it can be. […]”
Project G.G. got a teaser trailer and a few new images, too. Also, it’s confirmed that it is the second of the Platinum 4 projects.
The third Platinum 4 announcement covers the new Tokio studio. They are currently looking for several employers including game designers, programmers, artists, technical artists, audio creators, producers, project managers, and development support. We’ll not go into Kenichi Sato’s (CEO of PlatinumGames) message aside from him saying they follow the Platinum 8, the eight principles they follow in game development every day (he didn’t detail these). Instead, let’s say what Atsushi Inaba, the head of the studio, said.
The Tokyo office „represents a step towards a new challenge for us: Console live ops game development. […] These aren’t games we’d work on until they were done, and that’s all—rather, we’d continue working on them to provide new content long after release. We want to explore this ongoing development pattern in the home console space,” according to Inaba. A few of these examples for live service games could be Rainbow Six: Siege (Ubisoft) or Battlefield V (Electronic Arts). This office will have Motoi Fujita (studio director; he worked on many mobile live service games, such as FIFA Mobile), David Scripps (game client engineer; he also worked at EA Japan between 2013 and 2019), Miki Sato (project manager; FIFA Mobile, FIFA Mobile China), and Takahisa Sugiyama (game designer; FIFA Mobile). It seems PlatinumGames picked up a ton of former EA employees in Japan.
Best of luck to them, and it does seem like Project G.G. is PlatinumGames’ Ultraman…
