Sony’s new console (which is going to have the PlayStation buttons’ icons all over it, just as with the DualSense) is going to improve its user interface, too.
The ResetEra forums noticed a few comments by Matt MacLaurin, the vice president responsible for the UX design (UX = user experience, user interface) on LinkedIn: „My team is [responsible for] the user interface, not the ID – you’ll see our stuff soon. A little more pragmatic, but a 100% overhaul of [the] PlayStation 4 UI and some very different new concepts.” So we might get another event by Sony in August, possibly?
He also mentioned the PlayStation 5’s interface’s practical focus: „[I’m] excited about what we’ve got to show there. As it’s UI it’s practical first, but it’s a whole new visual language and a complete rearchitecting of the user interface.” And he added that the interface will be fast: „While we are obsessed with function, very few pixels left from the PlayStation 4 gen. What is the most important is experience goals measured in milliseconds across the entire UI.” Finally, he confirmed the following: „You will be seeing special editions. This is also customizable in ways previous gens weren’t.”
DFC Intelligence, a market analysing company, says that the PlayStation 5 generates more buzz than the Xbox Series X: „One measure of how excited an audience is about a new system is how many non-industry consumers contact us about product reveal events. Starting on May 7th, Microsoft will be hosting monthly reveal events. However, the interest we have seen in the Xbox events paled compared with the June 11th Sony event (which may be a reason Microsoft is skipping a June event).” They added that they might have held back the bigger announcements so far… but Sony might be behind Microsoft in the subscription race (Xbox Game Pass: 10+ million subscibers, PlayStation Now: 2.2 million…)
Last but not least, Jim Ryan, the CEO and president of Sony Interactive Entertainment, told CNET that Sony is preparing for the launch of the console: „We will see meaningful activity with retailers in terms of the generation of preorders, even if its price is absent. But we will be collecting those data points, extrapolating what that means in terms of day one demand – and we’ve obviously done this many times and you know, we’re not perfect, but we’re not bad at it either – and that will, in turn, inform the production process. A lot of very serious work starts for us right now.” This seems to underline what we reported in April via Bloomberg: the site said the company might manufacture less PlayStation 5 units for 2020…
The PlayStation 5 Standard Edition and the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition will launch this Holiday season.
