Rocket League, which is essentially football/soccer with cars, is going through major changes this summer.

We previously wrote about how Epic Games has acquired Psyonix Studios, who released Rocket League more than five years ago on PC and PlayStation 4 (and also, on Nintendo Switch and Xbox One since) – on PS4, it was a hit out of the box, as it was a freebie for the PlayStation Plus subscribers. Already at the acquisition announcement, we suspected that the game will step off Steam to be an Epic Games Store-exclusive…

Psyonix announced that Rocket League is going to switch to a free-to-play model (we don’t know the exact date yet). At the same time, the game will show up on the Epic Games Store, and it will be similar to any other version of Rocket League. It will feature cross-platform support, and on PC, Steam and EGS-users can play against each other. If you have the game already, regardless of platform, it will still be supported with new updates and features. It applies to the Steam version, too, but soon, the game will not be available there (see the thought of exclusivity).

Everything will remain in your inventory. The free-to-play update brings cross-platform progression, and all you need for it is an Epic Games account to have the items, the Rocket Pass progression, and Competitive Rank will be available on any platform you play Rocket League on. Those who already have the game will get a Legacy status, which also brings all Rocket League-branded downloadable content released before free-to-play, „Est. 20XX” title that displays the first year you played Rocket League (if you played first in 2017, then it’d be Est. 2017), 200-plus Common items upgraded to “Legacy” quality, Golden Cosmos Boost, Dieci-Oro Wheels, and the Huntress Player Banner. All users who have played online before the free-to-play announcement will also receive the Faded Cosmos Boost.

So Epic Games is making Rocket League free-to-play shortly to have another way to earn cash aside from Fortnite.
