505 Games explained why Control: Ultimate Edition is an exemption from the rule…
Control: Ultimate Edition is exactly what you think it will be: the base game with all the DLC. However, it has an extra to it – those who buy this version of the game will receive a free upgrade to the next-gen console version on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, meaning they can play the PlayStation 5 or the Xbox Series X version for free! We add that ONLY this version will offer the free next-gen upgrade!
505 Games, the publisher, provided a response, but it’s nothing more than some PR talk: „We spent several months exploring all of our launch options for Control Ultimate Edition and no decision was taken lightly. Every avenue we pursued, there was some form of blocker and those blockers meant that at least one group of players ended up being left out of the upgrade for various reasons. As of today, we can’t offer an upgrade to everyone, and leaving any one group out feels unfair. We understand that is not what you want to hear.” Wow.
Keep in mind that Control: Ultimate Edition is essentially the same as the base game and the season pass. According to the publisher, the former is to „offer the full Control gameplay experience to new players in a single, easy-to-find product. Unfortunately, [we are] unable to offer an upgrade path to all existing Control players.”
Control’s PlayStation 4 or Xbox One owners can play this version on the PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X via backwards compatibility, but it won’t be the „upgraded experience” Remedy Entertainment has previously announced.
Control: Ultimate Edition launches on August 27 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Steam. (Epic Games Store/Microsoft Store: October10.) Later this year (November?), the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X will receive it, too. Physical version: 2021.
