Microsoft Is Bullish On Acquisitions; Is SEGA Next?

The founder of Bethesda also spoke about the company’s acquisition.

CNET interviewed Satya Nadella (the CEO of Microsoft) and Phil Spencer (the head of Xbox). They both expressed that they will handle Bethesda the same way as the smaller „fishes,” such as Double Fine or Obsidian, meaning the company will be semi-independent (possibly hinting at the publishing). Nadella is serious: „You can’t wake up one day and say, “Let me build a game studio.” The idea of having content is so we can reach larger communities. […] We’ll always look for places where there is that commonality of purpose, mission and culture. We will always look to grow inorganically where it makes sense,” he said.

As the Redmond-based company failed at buying Tiktok, they had money to buy Bethesda… and they still have cash. On Reddit , a topic explains via multiple images that make SEGA suspicious. Nowadays, SEGA and Microsoft are on friendly terms, the XboxEra podcast also hints at Microsoft being up to something, and some of their employees talk about another acquisition happening shortly. And if we think about it, Microsoft would gain a foothold in Japan with this move, and this is what Spencer wants after all…

„I think this is an extremely interesting acquisition on the part of both groups. Microsoft deepens their bench instantly with one of the most experienced companies in entertainment software (during a time when video game sales are at an all-time high), and Bethesda gets the benefit of concentrating their creative firepower on software that feeds the Microsoft pipelines. A good prospective marriage of interests with a large domestic public partner,” Christopher Weaver, the founder of Bethesda Softworks and executive producer of the early The Elder Scrolls titles, told Inverse in an interview.

Weaver says that Microsoft understands that Bethesda knows how to create quality titles (possibly including Starfield and The Elder Scrolls VI), adding that the key to it is to keep executives away from the game until it’s completed. He says he never met an executive that wanted to rush a game out the door to have more sales.

„I do not think the elimination of the disc drive will prove to be overly material. Both 9th generation consoles will have increased processing capability and SSDs. Once people get used to this short-term perceived limitation, they will realize a dramatic increase in reliability and responsiveness. High-speed internet will provide the bridge,” Weaver added about the next-gen consoles.

We’d bet a penny on Microsoft announcing this Fall that SEGA is also theirs.
