PlayStation 5: was BenQ wrong? No 1440p support!

It looks like Sony‘s new console will only support the two ends of the scale: 1080p or 4K. Nothing in between!

A week ago, we quoted what BenQ has previously written on its website. It got since removed: „„While there’s a lot of talk of 120Hz concerning the new consoles and late 2020 graphics cards, let’s be realistic. Most of it doesn’t apply to 4K, but more to 1080p or 1440p. It’ll be another generation before 120 frames per second in 4K are normative for the majority of games.

We expect the PlayStation 5 (and by extension, most PC titles) to deliver firm 4K 60Hz for the next few years. If you’re interested in high frame rates, you may want to consider a good QHD gaming monitor, as 1440p will be supported by the PlayStation 5 with a higher likelihood of 120Hz in that resolution. Otherwise, if you want to enjoy PS5 gaming in their sweet spot settings, then 4K 60Hz is where it’s at, from open world to first-person shooters,” BenQ says. The Xbox Series duo will both support 1440p.”

This was in late October, but since then, things have changed. Back then, we suspected that BenQ knew something that Sony didn’t want us to know, but it turns out they weren’t right: according to IGN Italy, Sony’s representatives confirmed that the PlayStation 5 doesn’t natively support 1440p. It means that you can indeed hook a 1440p display to the console, but you will likely get a 1080p signal upscaled, which might not look that good. Sony thus continues the PlayStation 4 Pro’s idea of only supporting 1080p or 4K, even if some games ran at around 1440p, just upscaled…

So in case you have a PC monitor that supports this resolution to use the PlayStation 5 with it, prepare to be disappointed – you either get a 4K-ready TV or display or you have to stick to 1080p altogether.

The PlayStation 5 launches on November 12/19, depending on your region.
