Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury: A Much Better Launch Than On The Wii U

The expanded game jumped from the Nintendo Wii U to the Nintendo Switch, and it took a great launch: does the big N now have another killer app?

In the United Kingdom, Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury took the fastest-selling game if we look at the physical (boxed, retail) sales. With this performance, it comfortably took the first place in the last week’s charts, despite it originally launching in 2013 on the Nintendo Wii U, even though the Japanese company has expanded the game with a side-story for the four characters. (The Wii U original launched on the same day as the PlayStation 4 did in the UK… and the lack of success already showed how the game debuted in 14th place in the country.)

Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury has thus become the third-best launching Mario game on the Switch, beating the 2D games (Super Mario Maker 2 – June 2019, New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe – January 2019), but finishing behind the 3D ones (Super Mario Odyssey – October 2017, Super Mario 3D All-Stars – September 2020), which seems reasonable, as the game is effectively set between the two approaches. The new Mario launch boosted the sales of the previous titles: 3D All-Stars saw an 11, and Odyssey had a 28% increase compared to the week before it. The plumber thus had no less than seven games in the top 20.

Here’s the top 10 from last week, with the previous week’s position in brackets:

  1. Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury (new entry)
  2. Animal Crossing: New Horizons (1.)
  3. FIFA 21 (8.)
  4. Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales (12.)
  5. Mario Kart 8: Deluxe (2.)
  6. Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War (3.)
  7. Little Nightmares 2 (new entry)
  8. Minecraft (Nintendo Switch; 5.)
  9. Assassin’s Creed Valhalla (10.)
  10. Ring Fit Adventure (4.)

The Nintendo Switch took five spots in the top ten, which is pretty strong. Meanwhile, we see only one PlayStation-exclusive (in 4th place). The 270K physical sales is a massive 44% increase from last week, which isn’t too shabby.
