It seems the team isn’t going back to the Titanfall IP soon, but do something brand new instead.
Vince Zampella, the founder of Respawn Entertainment (who now helps around DICE Los Angeles, meaning he is involved with developing the new Battlefield) retweeted this job offer on Twitter: „[Do you] want to get in early and help build a new IP from scratch? We’re a team of five people right now looking for our 6th (a coder)!”, the tweet says. This confirms that Respawn is working on a new IP. Zampella then added: „[Are you] looking for an exciting new opportunity? New Respawn project, super exciting stuff. Get in early!”
Let’s see what the job listing says: „We are looking for a Software Engineer to join a compact incubation team currently developing a brand new IP.” The perks include „early involvement in developing a brand new IP; pioneer new ways to enable “adventuring until the heat death of the universe,” and hard-zero policy against crunch and overtime.” So they are openly against crunching and overtime, which seems exciting.
The game is in pre-production, meaning it’s not under full-scale development, and it also means the project won’t launch in the next year or so. We can also rule out Titanfall 3 and a sequel to Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. The former could be interesting, as the team has had a solid campaign in the second game, which got unlucky by launching too close to Battlefield 1. The latter surprised Electronic Arts, as the game sold better than expected, and without live service, monetization, DLC, or even online play, as it was a single-player, offline title.
Whatever Respawn is doing, don’t expect it in the next 2-3 years. After all, they explicitly said it’s an incubation project, meaning it’s not in proper development yet.
