The PlayStation 5-exclusive’s perhaps one of the biggest issues might be solved shortly by the Finnish studio.
A few players have pointed out that they would gladly accept if Returnal allowed a save system, which allows selling in the middle of a run. Sure, the roguelike saves certain permanent unlocks between runs, but if you have to leave in the middle of a run and you turn your PlayStation 5 off, then you will lose your results from that run altogether. That’s not beneficial for the player, is it?
Mikael Haveri, the marketing director of Housemarque, told Axios Gaming in an interview that the mid-run save feature is „something that we’re actively, very actively trying to get out as soon as we can.” In other words, everyone in the studio, including the cleaners, is developing the solution for the game, which, according to them, was meant to go with the „easy to learn, but hard to master” mentality. (A classic example of such a series could be Road Rash from the 90s.)
You can’t save in the middle of a run (exactly because of this mentality), and it could be problematic especially for those who don’t have time to complete a single run in one sitting, which can take between three and five hours. „We understand that there are some systems in place that are currently a hindering factor,” Haveri said. However, we have yet to see what the solution will be, as, according to him, they „just don’t know exactly what it is” because „there’s a lot of different people looking for different things.”
However, if they release a patch (1.3.6), where they had to fix issues coming from a previous patch (1.3.3, which brought some corrupted saves…), then we have to wait for a while until they figure it out…
