The Poles financial earnings report has landed, and from it, we learned that they aren’t starting a new AAA development this year.
CD Projekt‘s first quarter of the year (January-March) has been published in the report here, and it’s not entirely positive. The profits were 65% down year-on-year due to the slowing sales of both The Witcher 3 (which is now on PlayStation Now, more details in a previous article from today) and Cyberpunk 2077. The latter’s launch performance wasn’t that marvellous, which is why Sony kicked it off the PlayStation Store.
However, it looks like there are some metrics to rejoin the digital Sony store: „I cannot go deep into the set of metrics or how the conversation is progressing, this has to remain at the discretion of PlayStation [and] ourselves, but yes, there is some sort of metrics, let’s put it like that. […] There is a process, we’re in the middle of that process and conversations are happening. The decision will be announced when it’s ready to be announced,” the Poles said. Previously, they said it’s Sony’s decision.
And this image shows how Cyberpunk 2077 still has a long way to go to fix the crashes, even though their amount decreased since the December launch. (How do they keep track of it, though? On consoles, we can see how, but on PC…?) Speaking of this game, here’s what CD Projekt had to say about their plans for the second half of 2021: „As we announced during the strategy update, we are planning to start AAA development from 2022. This is a year of transformation, there is much more work [to be done] on Cyberpunk. A big part of the team is still working on Cyberpunk, but definitely, teams are preparing future unannounced projects. I would say 1/3 of the Cyberpunk team […] is working on an unannounced thing, but it’s not like we’re in parallel AAA development. […] Nearly half of the Cyberpunk team continue working on Cyberpunk itself and [the] next-gen edition. Then we have teams preparing work on unannounced AAA lines,” they said.
Imagine what their situation would be if they planned to launch Cyberpunk 2077 in late 2021 and not in late 2020…
