Vice reported that hackers broke into Electronic Arts‘ servers and managed to steal 780 GB of data. The news was spotted on hacker forums, where they wrote that they now “have all the skills to exploit all EA services.” And the company confirmed that they had indeed hacked into their network.
The paper also reports that the source code for FIFA 21 and the Frostbite graphics engine has been stolen. The latter is used in many EA games, including Battlefields and most sports games. However, according to an EA representative, they will not be affected:
“We are investigating a recent incident of intrusion into our network where a limited amount of game source code and related tools were stolen,” an EA spokesperson told Motherboard in a statement. “No player data was accessed, and we have no reason to believe there is any risk to player privacy. Following the incident, we’ve already made security improvements and do not expect any impact on our games or our business. We are actively working with law enforcement officials and other experts as part of this ongoing criminal investigation.”
Hackers have also visited the servers of other major video game companies in recent months. In November last year, for example, Capcom was hit with a bunch of data, so it’s anyone’s guess what the Japanese company will surprise us within the coming years. And from CD Project, source code was leaked earlier this year, among other things, and even now information has been made public.
It seems that Electronic Arts’ data has not been made public by the hackers, who are trying to sell it to “serious” customers, according to Vice. But it’s easy to imagine that within weeks or months, this data will also turn up on a public forum.
