Sony also released new sales figures for PlayStation 5 in its financial report for its first fiscal quarter (April to June 2021).
In these three months, 2.3 million PlayStation 5 units and half a million PlayStation 4s were shipped. As the PS5 wasn’t available a year ago, we cannot provide a comparison, but since the PS4 was, we can say that we see a 1.4 million decrease from 1.9 million year-on-year. The PlayStation 4 is at 116.4 million, and the PlayStation 5 is at 10.1 million units. Regarding the latter, Sony wants to ship 14.8 million units in the current fiscal year (April 2021-March 2022).
And the base is there for it. Hiroki Totoki, the chief financial officer, said that the company managed to obtain enough chips (semiconductors) to achieve the target for the PlayStation 5. That means the company isn’t going to reduce its 14.8-million expectation. It might even see a minor increase later this year!
And the console is slowly turning a profit. Hiroki also said: “Our fiscal ’22 forecast remains unchanged from the previous forecast. And there is no change to this fiscal year’s target of selling more than 14.8 million units of PlayStation 5, which was the number of units we sold of PlayStation 4 in the fiscal year after its launch.” The PlayStation 5 Standard Edition is now turning a profit with each sale (it recuperated the initial costs), according to Bloomberg, but this is not the case with the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition yet.
Let’s see the other results: there are 46.3 million PlayStation Plus subscribers as of June 30, 2021. Year on year, it’s a 1.3 million increase from June 2020 (45 million). PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 games sold 63.6 million units in the previous quarter (but it’s a significant drop: 27.8 million down from 91.4 million a year ago). 10.5 million were internally developed, first-party titles (another decrease: 8.2 million down from 18.7). The digital game sales (PlayStation Store) reached 71%, slightly less than a year ago (74%).
Solid results.
