BURN will be released next year.
STONE developer Convict Games has announced BURN, a one-player interactive story game about the tragedy of a pop star that tells 16 different endings to a story. The game will be available in 2022 for Xbox Series, Xbox One and PC via Steam.
Here’s a review of the game, courtesy of Convict Games: NINA BURN is a Finnish pop star whose short and tragic fate is told through 3 acts: (DEBUT) at 17, (ESTABLISHMENT) at 24 and (CLIMAX) at 27, through moments in her life. BURN is an interactive story game where your dialogue choices will change Nina’s style, dialogue, and soundtrack and lead to 16 possible outcomes. Players can choose to play through the game in either “HUMBLE” or “ARROGANT” mode, which will steer Nina’s story towards a lighter or darker ending. The sixteen variations are grouped into three broad categories, GOOD, BAD and UGLY END.
BURN is also a purely interactive game, controlled solely through dialogue choices and the selection of specific interaction options. While retaining the feel of STONE, the experience has been twisted to the maximum to allow players to explore and unravel Nina’s story. BURN is, therefore, not a 3D adventure game, but something completely new, with a series of high-quality animations, music and dialogue that change throughout the game based on your choices.
The unique thing about BURN is that we never get to know any of NINA’s hits. Instead, BURN selects the musical moods that best suit the gameplay from a set of multiple genres. It includes, for example, a soundtrack composed by music director Joonas Turner, creator of Tormentor X Punisher, but also features some other great musicians/ensembles such as Broforce, Noita and Nuclear Throne. The musical moods are set by the greats of dark ambient, techno, black metal, Berlin post-wave, Russian sci-fi ambient and hip-hop. Each time you shuffle through the story, the composed track also shifts genres, giving you a different mood, lighter or darker, based on your choices and replay. As each genre is unlocked, players can also choose a style that they find most enjoyable for the overall story.
BURN also includes an open map to explore and a drive-in movie theatre featuring full-length public domain classic films that can be explored out-of-game in the same way seen in the debut STONE.
“BURN is a case study and a reflection on the lengths someone will go to for their art and the price of fame,” said writer and director Greg Louden of the film. “We’ve been working on BURN since the COVID lockout began in February 2020, out of a passion for the music industry, pop stars, body horror, and classic music films and documentaries.” – admitted the artist at the press conference announcing the game.
