Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher 3 might both slip to 2022 with their respective next-gen versions; CD Projekt RED wants to play it safe with the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series.
Cyberpunk 2077’s launch was catastrophic (Sony pulled the PlayStation 4 version of the game from the PlayStation Store), and while it arrived after the launch of the next-gen consoles (with several delays included), the Polish company still hasn’t released the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series version of Night City’s adventures. It might not even happen this year!
Michal Nowakowski, the senior vice president of CD Projekt’s business development, said the following during the financial earnings for the company’s first six 2021 months: “The target is to release the next-gen version of Cyberpunk 2077 late this year. At the same time, keeping in mind the lessons we have learned during the past year and taking into account that this project remains in development, we can’t say with complete certainty that the production schedule will not change.
With The Witcher 3, the situation is slightly different in how this is being tackled by the external team mainly, which is Saber Interactive, the company that we have worked with before on Switch and with updates in the past. As with Cyberpunk 2077, our goal is to release that game still in late 2021. However, similarly, the development process is ongoing, and we cannot be dead sure that the release schedule will not change. But for the time being, we are aiming with both titles for late 2021, and I don’t want to be more specific at this moment in time,” Nowakowski said.
So we might see even more delays from 2021 to 2022 as if we haven’t had a ton of them already. You can even bet money on one of the CD Projekt RED next-gen patches getting pushed to next year. If we had to guess, it’d be The Witcher 3, as Cyberpunk 2077 needs its reputation restored first.
