Cats have a reason why they get attached to controllers and keyboards while we play, and it’s very much tied to their personality.

If you have a cat, you’re used to all its quirks. If you want to make the bed, they drive you crazy while playing with the sheets. If you want to dress up, you’ll find dozens of hairs clinging to your clothes. And if you want to play video games, they’ll appear at some point to distract you. While this habit is both cute and frustrating, research now reveals that our pets have a reason for behaving this way: they want a little attention from their owners.

To find the answer to this eternal question, Gaming Bible portal spoke to Sally Chamberlain, who studies cat behaviour. According to the expert, it turns out that “cats become attached to their owners and want to be with them, often interfering with what their owners are doing to get their attention.”In addition, Gaming Bible added two more factors that make a video gaming environment an ideal place for a cat: it should be a warm place and the animal should feel safe.

According to Chamberlain, “Electrical equipment is always warm and keyboards and controllers can be an interesting toy for cats, especially if they see its owner using them with the quick movements of his hands and fingers.”

But there may be another, equally logical explanation. Knowing that cats are notoriously selfish, the reason for their interference in play may be that they expect some kind of reward: “If their master does something, it may lead them to think that it must be something good that will give them a reward. The cat wants to join in so that he or she can gain something from the activity.”

Whatever the reason between the two, it’s safe to say that our video game activity can be enjoyable for cats, so they may never stop interrupting to get a little attention or to get something in return. With this in mind, the expert suggests having a platform on the table or a second, detached keyboard so that the cat can think it’s part of the game, while at the same time letting us play in peace. Or alternatively, it may be helpful to reward the cat when he is in his own ‘zone’, giving him the feeling that he owns the place.
