Crystal Dynamics wanted more freedom and flexibility with Marvel’s Avengers Spider-Man, and that required more work.

 

 

According to Crystal Dynamics, the developers of Marvel’s Avengers, integrating Spider-Man’s character and abilities into the game was a significant challenge. Recently, several team members were interviewed: just days before the superhero’s debut, they asked the studio about the inspiration for this version of the famous superhero and the difficulties they faced in development to get to the final result.

“Our Spider-Man was inspired by the comic books, not based on the Spider-Man in Insomniac’s game,” said Scott Walters, the studio’s lead designer. “Instead, we used the character’s roots and took from there what we needed to create his story, his moves and his abilities.”

But that wasn’t the only thing Crystal Dynamics looked at to create their Spider-Man. Walters also mentioned that the team drew from other mediums such as cartoons, movies, video games and even sampled titles from the first PlayStation release to present the best possible version of the character in Marvel’s Avengers.

 

 

“Our goal when creating a superhero is to emphasise what it is that identifies him, that makes him special when you see him on screen,” Walters continued. “In Spider-Man’s case, the most important thing for us was to make his abilities very clear, such as swinging a web and climbing a wall.”

Speaking of swinging, it was the hero’s movement that presented the most difficulty during development. Fighting didn’t prove to be as challenging as the studio thought it would be, but making Spider-Man’s movement unique required even more hard work from the team. “We did something similar with Kamala and her extendable arms, but it didn’t represent the sense of freedom and flexibility we wanted to achieve with Spider-Man,” Walters concludes.

Spider-Man arrives in Marvel’s Avengers on November 30 as a PlayStation-exclusive character.
