PS5 sales beat Xbox but not Nintendo Switch in Japan
Famitsu shared figures for video game sales in Japan in 2021, and, through that information, we can see that Nintendo Switch is the most successful console, while PS5 is still able to beat Xbox. We also have the opportunity to see the best-selling games. The data refers to the time period from 28 December 2020 to 19 December 2021.
Nintendo Switch (base model, Lite and OLED combined) sold 5.3 million units in 2021 in Japan. In addition, if we add the sales of PS5, PS4, Xbox X | S Series and Nintendo 3DS, we would reach 1.1 million units. This means that Nintendo’s newest console family has been able to sell almost five times more than all other consoles combined.
Going into details, here is the sales data of the other consoles in 2021 in Japan:
Famitsu reported on the 2021 total sales of all the systems:
Switch – 5.3m (2020 was 5.1m)
PS5 – 942k
PS4 – 103k
Xbox Series – 95kFrom 2017 to 2021, Switch has sold more and more every single year in Japan. There has been no decline ever.

As you can see, PS4 was able to outsell Xbox X | S Series, while PS5 sold ten times more than its direct competitor. No data has been shared regarding the Xbox One family of consoles, but we believe these are extremely minimal numbers. Nintendo Switch achieved similar results to 2020, during which it sold 5.1 million units.
We always remind you that this data indicates public interest in the various consoles, but more importantly, it shows the number of units shipped. The success (or failure) of a current-generation console, as we have been repeating for a year now, is deeply influenced by production and availability.
Finally, we also look at some data related to top-selling games. Animal Crossing New Horizons continues its success, followed by Monster Hunter Rise, Pokémon Shining Diamond and Shimmering Pearl, and Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury.
