Konami Kicks Footballer Mason Greenwood out of PES and eFootball Games Over Sexual Harassment Scandal

Manchester United and EA have already done the same with FIFA 22, removing the player from both the real and virtual teams over the scandal.

Sometimes in sport, the news is not about great deeds or spectacular actions, but about sad or unpleasant events that only give a star player a bad name. This is the case with the controversy surrounding Manchester United footballer Mason Greenwood, who was removed from the team and EA also removed him from FIFA 22 game modes earlier.

Greenwood has been accused of sexual harassment and rape, the case is under investigation by the authorities, and the player has lost major sponsors such as Nike. Now, Konami has decided to follow in EA’s footsteps and continue to remove Greenwood from its own games.

Specifically, his profile will disappear from both PES 2021 and eFootball 2022, whether it’s the PC and console versions or the versions designed for mobile devices. “In PES 2021, users on mobile will not be able to get the player, but those who have it will not be affected,” the Japanese company said in a statement. “Konami condemns all forms of violence. While a police investigation is ongoing, it is inappropriate to comment further on this.”

This is not the first time similar cases have directly affected video games that feature real people in their licensed content. In football this is more common than you might think, take the example of Benjamin Mendy in FIFA 22, who was removed from the game pending legal action, or the disappearance of Van Basten from FIFA 20 for posting a Nazi manifesto.
