The franchise that emerged as a cyberpunk tabletop RPG may be expanding to the other two console manufacturers after the officially announced Nintendo Switch release.
Shadowrun first saw the light of day in 1989 and spawned a total of eight video games in the 1990s and 2000s. The first of these came from Beam Software: a game called Shadowrun was released for the SNES in 1993. Set in a futuristic world of corporate warfare and industrial espionage, we have to fight street fighters, rogue artificial intelligence, plague, and even dragons to become a corporate power.
In September 2021, it was announced that three PC games, namely Shadowrun Returns (released in 2013), Shadowrun: Dragonfall – Director’s Cut (dated 2014), and Shadowrun: Hong Kong – Extended Edition (dated 2015), would be released for Nintendo Switch in 2022. The franchise has also been released on Xbox 360, iOS and Android over the past decades. But it looks like the trilogy won’t just be appearing on Nintendo’s hugely popular hybrid platform…
Gematsu has announced on Twitter that the Taiwanese age rating committee has reviewed Shadowrun Trilogy for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, which is officially announced for Switch with a somewhat open-ended release date (only “2022” is confirmed). It’s backed up by a post on Reddit that the trilogy is already on the PlayStation Network backend, so the multiplatform onslaught is slowly but surely being prepared.
If the trilogy is already in this state, Paradox Interactive, or the developer Harebrained Schemes, should speak up soon, even if the studio is silent: it’s not common to review a game several months before its release, and it’s certainly not common to put a game on a network so early (of course, network testing is another matter, and it’s done under a pseudonym: we’ve seen examples of this with Call of Duty).
The interesting thing is that the original developers (FASA) have gone out of business, and the IP belongs to Microsoft…
