Gotham Knights: Can We Expect 4 Player Bat Family Co-Op Support?

Gotham Knights’ updated game profile suggests that the game may support the four-player Bat Family Co-op.

While Gotham Knights isn’t necessarily a direct sequel to Rocksteady’s Batman Arkham series, the connection to the earlier games is part of what makes the title exciting for many fans of the previous series. Another appealing aspect of the game is the mixing of the main characters in the Bat family and the possibility of two-player co-operative play. This game aspect could become even more exciting, as a recent update to the Gotham Knights profile suggests that co-op may have been expanded to support four players.

An unconfirmed update for Gotham Knights has surfaced on the title’s official PlayStation Store profile.

The store profile lists two relevant details. The first is how many people can play over the network, and the second is how many players can play online with a PlayStation Plus subscription. Both figures now show four players.

So far, Gotham Knights has been advertised as a fully two-player co-operative experience. It’s not just developer WB Montreal that has mentioned the feature in passing. It was a significant marketing point; in fact, WB Montreal went so far as to say that the game’s combat was explicitly designed for two-player co-op. That’s why, although the official game profile for the program lists a four-player co-op, Batman fans will have to wait for further confirmation.

As with classic arcade gameplay, players can choose their favourite members of the bat family…

The possibility of expanding Gotham Knights to a four-player co-op is the same thing that made the two-player co-op so exciting. This means that, like in classic arcade games, players can choose their favourite members of the bat family and play together. Instead of just Batgirl and Nightwing, an entire team of Batgirl, Nightwing, Robin and Red Hood can play together. Or up to four Nightwings, if players so desire, why not.

If WB Montreal decides to expand co-op to four players, it would undoubtedly mean that the game’s combat system would have to be redesigned for additional players. The extra time made available by the delay of Gotham Knights may have been used to expand multiplayer and rebalance the combat, although it seems that WB had plenty of development to do without it.

With the game scheduled for release later this year, on October 25, WB will probably not wait long to make an official announcement about the possible expansion of co-op to four-player. This could mean an announcement at the Summer Game Fest or possibly at another event in June. Either way, fans can expect more information soon.

Gotham Knights will be released on October 25 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S.
