Ubisoft has favoured the Epic Games Store for the past few years. Now, it looks like Ubisoft’s games may be returning to Steam after a hiatus of several years. One such game could be Assassin’s Creed Valhalla.

It’s been long since Ubisoft released its last game on Steam. Their last such product was Trials Rising on February 26, 2019, which means it’s been almost four years since the French company’s new PC games were only available on Ubisoft Connect and the Epic Games Store. Now, however, it looks like they may soon be returning to Valve’s online store.

GitHub user YoobieRE was digging through the source code for Assassin’s Creed Valhalla on Ubisoft Connect and found the line “Internal Dev/QC – Assassin’s Creed Valhalla [STEAM].” Ubisoft added this recently, so it does seem like the game that has been avoiding Steam is ready to debut on the platform. However, when Insider Gaming asked the company about the matter, they were told “we don’t comment on rumors and speculation.”

Ubisoft presumably decided to ditch Steam to avoid having to pay Valve for game sales and to lure audiences to their own platform. It’s probably also a side effect of the fact that EGS doesn’t charge as high a percentage of the money from sales and that Epic tends to pay for Valve’s neglect. However, as Steam has become even busier over the last few years, and gamers don’t like to use multiple platforms at once, it’s not so easy to ignore. In 2020, Electronic Arts threw in the towel and returned to the platform, even though for years their PC games were only available on their own platform, Origin. It’s easy to imagine that Ubisoft also decided that Steam wasn’t worth missing out on.

Anyway, AC Valhalla has been very successful, with over 20 million players according to Ubisoft. Ubisoft has a number of games in the pipeline (Avatar, Skull & Bones, Assassin’s Creed), so there should be something to come back to Steam with.
