The developers of God of War: Ragnarök at Santa Monica Studios have admitted that until recently, they were concerned about the quality of the new instalment.
It seems that the developers of God of War: Ragnarök at Santa Monica Studios were not nearly as confident as they made themselves out to be. It turns out that they were worried about the quality of the game until three months ago. The game officially launches today for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. It’s the sequel to the hit 2018 game, and there’s enormous anticipation.
God of War blew gamers and critics away when it was released in 2018, selling more than 23 million copies worldwide, thanks partly to its PC release.
The game currently has a Metacritic rating of 94 and has won multiple Game of the Year awards. All this is ahead of big releases such as Marvel’s Spider-Man and Red Dead Redemption 2. The game ended on a somewhat ambiguous note, bringing the story to a close but making it clear that there is still much more to come. Now we finally get our hands on Ragnarok to find out what the sequel has in store!
As it turns out, the game’s development has not been smooth. In a recent interview, Eric Williams admitted that even three months before the release of God of War: Ragnarök, developers were worried that the game wouldn’t be any good. In fact, he couldn’t imagine how they must be feeling right now.
“It’s funny, because for some people, the game will come out on 9 November, and on 10 November, they’re gonna be like, “What’s next?” Everybody wants to take a break, but really they’re like, “We’ve got to start building.” When you work with people that are at the apex of what they do, you’re going to get magic. I just came from a room with those people. All I could say to them was, “Thank you.” They were freaking out three months ago, “Holy crap, the game’s not good. What are we going to do?” I can’t even imagine how they feel today. I wish I had a time machine to go back and feel like that.”
The development of God of War: Ragnarök was not without its problems
Like many other games, God of War: Ragnarök had its share of problems during its development cycle. The exact details of the work will likely remain unknown to the public. But quite a few stories have leaked out over the years. The developers have received death threats from angry fans, and Atreus’ voice has had to be edited because of Sunny Suljic’s mutation. And at the end of last month, a lot leaked out about the game. But for now, the developers’ hard work seems to have paid off.
As it stands, the game has a Metacritic score of 94, and some critics have called God of War: Ragnarök a “once-in-a-generation” game.
It remains to be seen whether the developers’ fears will be confirmed for the general public. Still, for now, it looks like Santa Monica Studio may have put together another masterpiece of god-killing.
