Fallout: New Vegas’ Director Would Return To The Franchise

He already has ideas for where Fallout: New Vegas 2 could be set if given a chance by Microsoft (who own both Obsidian Entertainment and Bethesda).

Obsidian Entertainment has only had one chance to work on Fallout, which resulted in Fallout: New Vegas. The studio then went on to create South Park: The Stick of Truth for THQ (and eventually Ubisoft) and became part of Xbox Game Studios over time. Microsoft now owns ZeniMax Media, its subordinate Bethesda, and all its IP. So there’s nothing legally stopping Obsidian from getting back into Fallout (which is what studio head Feargus Urquhart wants, as we’ve written about).

Josh Sawyer was Fallout: New Vegas’ director and spoke on Kinda Funny Xcast about his desire to return to the franchise, which since only Todd Howard’s studio, Bethesda Game Studios, handled: “I love Fallout, I love the setting, I could see myself working on it again, but you know, we’ll see where the future takes me. In the past, people have talked about New Orleans. California or the Midwest would also be exciting. As a director, I have to be passionate about it and ensure that the team is excited about and works within the larger idea of the IP. […] When it’s a kind of larger IP or franchise, it has to work within a larger vision of “What is Fallout?” […] I think there are a lot of cool places in the US. Many people have talked about Fallout in other parts of the world. I think those are interesting as well.”

So Sawyer already has locations where he would put Fallout: New Vegas 2 in the United States, but he would also see a realistic backdrop for the story outside of it. However, he’s not who decides what gets to be developed for Xbox and what doesn’t. (We’re not talking about Obsidian, as Urquhart would also like to work on Fallout again…)
