According to a leaker, the new game from The Evil Within and Ghostwire Tokyo studio Tango Gameworks could be something quite different from the previous ones.
Tango Gameworks, the developer behind The Evil Within, could be working on a brand new JRPG project. The company was founded back in 2010 by Shinji Mikami, known for survival horror games like Resident Evil.
After 2014’s The Evil Within and its sequel a few years later, the company’s name became synonymous with some of the best horror games of recent years; their next game, Ghostwire: Tokyo, retains the horror vibe of the previous titles but is more focused on action
The recent Hi-Fi Rush, on the other hand, was a complete departure from the previous titles. Now it seems that the next project will move even further away from the survival horror roots that inspired the studio.
According to leaker eXtas1s, Tango Gameworks may be working on a new Japanese role-playing game. It would be the first game for an entirely new IP. If all is true, it would be a radical departure from previous horror games. Apparently, the studio is working on two other games besides this as-yet-unnamed game. If eXtas1s is to be believed, neither of them will be The Evil Within 3. Since eXtas1s is known for some notable leaks, such as Hideo Kojima’s upcoming game Overdose, he seems to be a pretty credible source.
Back in February, Tango Gameworks announced that the company’s CEO, Shinji Mikami, would be leaving the studio.
Mikami had worked at Capcom for decades before founding Tango Gameworks, helping to create franchises such as Resident Evil and Devil May Cry. Now that he’s gone, the studio could be in for a significant change, and these upcoming games are proof of that.
As Hi-Fi Rush recently showed, Tango Gameworks isn’t just into horror games. With its bright colours and rhythm-based action, this game shows that the studio is also good at other kinds of gameplay. Or that it doesn’t have to focus entirely on its core IP. For now, though, it’s best to wait for the official announcement before speculating too much about the next project, as there’s almost no information on it.
