MOVIE NEWS – The Russo brothers, who wrote and produced both Tyler Rake movies, are looking at the chances of a third film ahead of the sequel’s Netflix premiere.
Ahead of the sequel’s release, the Russo brothers are looking at the chances of Extraction 3. In the first film, Chris Hemsworth played Tyler Rake, a black-market mercenary who must rescue the kidnapped son of an international criminal. Despite almost dying at the end of the first film, the lead character returns for another big mission in Extraction 2, which will be released on Netflix on 16 June.
Now, ahead of the release date of the second part, the Russo brothers, who co-wrote and produced the first two films, directed by Sam Hargrave, are looking at the chances of the third.
Joe Russo, credited as the sole screenwriter on the first two films, has not said whether a third instalment is currently in development. However, it is certainly possible that it will be made if the sequel is well received. You can read what Russo revealed in an interview with Collider below:
“I mean, you never want to anticipate the audience’s response, but there’s certainly room for an Extraction 3. There are some surprises in Extraction 2 that could open up the world of Extraction, on top of which, I think Sam Hargrave did an incredible job with this film, and I think that he has topped the first one.”
How will the adventures of Tyler Rake continue?
Since in Extraction 2, Tyler Rake returns for a new high-stakes mission unrelated to the first film, a possible franchise anthology format could be employed. So, the black market mercenary could go on standalone missions for each episode. The second part will include some surprises that expand the fictional world, as Russo hinted. But whether this will be done with a second sequel or a possible prequel to Hemsworth’s character is unclear.
The first two films were based on Andre Parks’ comic book Ciudad, although it’s unclear whether future instalments will continue to draw from the comic or will be based on an original story.
As Russo says, the chances of Extraction 3 will likely depend on how audiences react to the sequel. The first film received largely positive reviews for its electrifying action sequences and Hemsworth’s performance. However, there were some criticisms: the violence was considered gratuitous, and the story was generic. Shortly after its release in 2020, Extraction became the most-watched Netflix movie of all time. Since then, of course, it has been overtaken. If the sequel even comes close to reclaiming the crown, there’s a good chance a third film will do so.
