The Brooklyn and Queens boroughs of New York City will be included in Insomniac Games’ current-gen Spider-Man game.
Bryan Intihar, creative director of Insomniac Games, and Ryan Smith, director of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, surprisingly did not give an interview to a Western publication (such as EDGE or Game Informer) but revealed two essential details about the game to Japanese Famitsu. Jim Ryan, president, and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, previously called the game “uncompromising.” (It is a valid point in the sense that Marvel’s Spider-Man was made for PlayStation 4, while the PlayStation 5 opening title Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales was cross-gen, so it was also released on PS4, which is why the studio had to scale back its ideas.)
“We’ve added Queens and Brooklyn this time, so roughly speaking, the map size is about two times larger than the previous titles. Since these two areas are smaller and residential, I think you’ll find them different from Manhattan. We’ve prepared some unexpected situations we haven’t done before, like a battle on the river between two cities, so I hope you’ll look forward to them,” Intihar said of the urban expansion.
Smith confirmed that we’d be able to switch freely between Peter Parker and Miles Morales as we explore the open world of the game, so the number two in the game’s title not only means it’s a full-fledged sequel but also that there will be two Spider-Men: “There are things that are exclusive to a specific character depending on the content, but we’re also preparing content that allows you to play as whichever character you like. While they’re both Spider-Man and have some things in common, Miles is speedier than Peter, and they each have their quirks, so we hope you can choose your favorite character.”
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 will officially launch for PlayStation 5 in the autumn, but we’ve heard rumors that it will launch on Sony’s console in September. Based on Ryan’s previous comments, we’ll have to wait 2-3 years for the PC version (a timeframe that also applies to the recently announced Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart port).
