Would the iPhone 15 Be the “New Flagship” for Gamers Too?

This week Apple unveiled its latest devices, including the iPhone 15 and its various variants. The company’s aim is to make its phones the ideal gaming platform, providing serious competition for games consoles.

Apple recently held its annual big announcement, where the focus was on the iPhone 15 series, including the Pro and Pro Max models. These devices come with the next-generation A17 Pro chip, a 6-core GPU and ray tracing support. Later this year, they’ll feature games such as Death Stranding, Resident Evil Village and a new release of Resident Evil 4 in 2023, and in 2024, Assassin’s Creed Mirage will be available on the device without the need for cloud or other solutions.

US media outlet IGN interviewed Apple’s technical executives. Jeremy Sandel, the man in charge of graphics processors, said that the iPhone 15 Pro variant can be connected to 4K monitors, allowing you to enjoy Resident Evil 4 in high definition. Of course, fps and resolution will depend on the current graphics workload. So yes, you can use this valuable device as a powerful gaming console. The question of possible heat generation is also raised, but marketing director Kaiann Drance assured the audience that intensive testing is underway on both the hardware and software fronts.

According to Tim Millet, vice president of hardware, developers have tools at their disposal, such as the MetalFX upscaler, to maximize and maintain the gaming experience. “Our goal is to ensure that the gaming experience, battery efficiency and control work in harmony,” Millet added. Apple experts pointed out that the games will run on both Apple Silicon iPads and Macs, as their hardware architectures are unified.

As for control, Drance said it will be possible to connect controllers (such as DualSense or Backbone) to the iPhone 15. Sandel confirmed that developers have a free hand in terms of control. For example, Hideo Kojima opted for a traditional controller for Death Stranding.

Tim Millet said Apple is not necessarily competing against Sony or Microsoft for the gaming market. “We have everything in one place: your device, your camera, your memory and now a games console. It’s these experiences that make the new models exciting,” said Drance. Sandel added: “The best games console is the one you can take anywhere. […] This will be the ideal gaming platform.”

The iPhone 15 series will be released on 22 September, at a price point where you can get not only consoles but also gaming PCs.
