Xbox Game Pass is unexpectedly adding a new title from a long-running and historic franchise that few thought would be released so quickly.
Just over a decade after its first release, Killer Instinct Anniversary Edition has officially arrived! The updated title makes a surprise debut on Xbox Game Pass. On the 10th anniversary of the fan-favorite fighting game, developer Iron Galaxy has announced Killer Instinct Anniversary Edition. This new version of the acclaimed game includes significant visual updates and balance tweaks to the roster of 29 playable characters.
After a 17-year hiatus, Microsoft has rebooted the franchise on Xbox One with Killer Instinct. The reboot included three seasons worth of content updates as well as several additional characters. Even a decade later, the game still has a dedicated cult following.
Less than a week after Killer Instinct Anniversary Edition was announced, the game has been released and, as an added surprise, has joined the Xbox Game Pass library.
The release itself is a surprise, as the release date was announced only a few days ago. The inclusion in Game Pass is a surprising but pleasant development for fans and subscribers. It falls on a hectic day for the service. After all, a previous Game Pass update added two games: Rollerdome and Dune: Spice Wars. For those who aren’t Game Pass subscribers, Killer Instinct Anniversary Edition is a free upgrade. Provided you already own the digital version of the Definitive Edition. Otherwise, it’s available for $29.99 on Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
Killer Instinct Anniversary Edition aims to strengthen Game Pass’ fighting games.
The best multiplayer games on Xbox Game Pass include genre staples like Mortal Kombat 11, but the service could definitely make room for another deep, fighting game.
The role of the characters and the unique game ideas make Killer Instinct a fan favourite. The game’s Combo Breaker is easily one of the most iconic fighting game mechanics. The momentum-changing ability is a game-changing feature that allows players to change the course of a match.
With the Anniversary Edition now available on Xbox Game Pass, subscribers have no reason not to check out the underrated fighter. And for non-subscribers, the base game is available for free on Steam, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Windows PC.
