Instead, the Japanese company may announce another game later this year.
In the last five years, Capcom’s status has grown considerably, starting with 2017’s Resident Evil 7: Biohazard (the technology behind it, the RE Engine, has since become the company’s main engine, and it’s no coincidence that a next-generation version of it, RE neXt or REX Engine, is being developed). In 2019, we got Resident Evil 2 Remake, which sold over 12.6 million copies by June this year, followed a year later by Resident Evil 3 Remake, which didn’t sell as well (perhaps due to its flaws), with 7.6 million copies sold by June. This year we got Resident Evil 4 Remake, and its DLC, Separate Ways, was released in the fall.
But what’s next? Resident Evil 9 is in the pipeline (certainly now on the REX engine), but among the remakes, it’s not clear what’s next: will they put together Resident Evil: Code Veronica as a small project (about which producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi said “maybe” last year), or will they start with Resident Evil 5 Remake? A fake rumor about Code Veronica appeared on 4chan, and it seemed so stupid that we didn’t report it (a Japanese person doesn’t say I’m jap in English, that’s a bit racist…).
Dusk Golem, one of Capcom’s most prominent leakers, wrote on Reddit that there will be no Resident Evil remake in 2024, and that RE9 might not come until early 2025 (if we assume a 3-4 year development period, since RE8: Village was released in 2021, this is a fair guess). Instead, he said that Capcom will make a big game announcement this year. It will most likely be at The Game Awards (which is next week), and so we should probably expect Monster Hunter.
This makes sense, considering that March is the 20th anniversary of the franchise. Of course, none of this is official yet.
