Helldivers 2: Disastrous Launch – When Can We Expect A Fix?!

Helldivers 2 players are experiencing significant issues, but Arrowhead’s CEO has given an update on the patch’s progress.

Helldivers 2 was released on February 8th and is plagued with significant issues, including crashes, matchmaking errors, and login issues. Arrowhead, the studio behind Helldivers 2, has released an update on its progress in fixing the issues.

At the time of writing, Helldivers 2 is the best-selling game on Steam in the US and the third best-selling game worldwide following its highly anticipated release.

The third-person shooter is the sequel to Helldivers, a popular top-down shooter released in 2015. Many fans were waiting for his release, but unfortunately, things did not go so smoothly.

Arrowhead CEO Johan Pilestedt posted a message on the official Helldivers Discord, explaining that the studio is in “a bit of a crisis” as it works to fix various issues plaguing players. He also explained that the large number of users on day one created new problems that had not occurred during the game’s testing phase. Also, that Arrowhead is working on a patch to fix Helldivers 2.

Pilestedt advised users to team up with friends or other community members, as the “connect with friends” feature was working well at the time of his message.

At the time of writing, many users were reporting that the game’s servers were still experiencing significant issues. But Arrowhead has started making some backend fixes ahead of a future patch. Pilestedt didn’t give a time frame for when fans can expect Helldivers 2 to be patched.

What’s wrong with Helldivers 2 (on PC)?

The features of the game’s anti-cheat software are a cause for concern. Anti-cheat software is quite common in online multiplayer games but is usually limited to more competitive PvP games where cheating is more common, such as Call of Duty or Overwatch 2. Helldivers 2 is a PvE game where cheating is less encouraged as the players are encouraged to win or lose as a team.

Helldivers 2 uses the infamous nProtect GameGuard, an anti-cheat software that operates at the PC kernel level and raises security concerns.

This software has been the subject of controversy before. It can scan a player’s entire hard drive to look for files that can be used for cheating. Helldivers 2 CTO Peter Lindgren posted on the r/Helldivers Subreddit under the username ArrowheadGS to assure players that nProtect does not collect any personally identifiable information. However, it is still vulnerable to certain types of exploits and can pose a security risk.

In addition, nProtect GameGuard is also known to cause performance issues in some games, which may explain why Helldivers 2 is so buggy.

Some user reviews also mention what some players believe is a pay-to-win mechanic. But this is not a PC-specific problem. In addition, the game’s premium currency, called Super Credits, can be earned in-game.

The game doesn’t work on Steam Deck?!

Helldivers 2 may have issues on PC, but it’s even worse on Steam Deck. Many players claim that they cannot start the game at all. This could also be due to nProtect, but the root of the Helldivers 2 Steam Deck issues has yet to be revealed. However, it’s important to note that Valve hasn’t verified that Steam Deck works. This may change later, but it’s clearly not designed for the handheld platform for now.

Crashes are common when a game is first released. However, these problems are usually fixed quickly. Still, it’s disappointing to buy a PC game on day one and then find out it’s unplayable. Therefore, it is best to wait until the game’s performance issues and anti-cheat disputes are resolved before purchasing the game on a PC.
