The Finnish studio has admitted that the Alan Wake IP is part of the studio’s future.
Although Remedy Entertainment has been struggling for more than a decade to finally get a sequel to Alan Wake, the Finnish team has finally made it happen, and not with bad results. On Friday, the studio announced that Alan Wake 2 has become Remedy’s best-selling game (no big surprise when you rarely see anything new from them; it’s officially at 1.3 million sales).
Remedy CEO Tero Virtala says the studio is pleased with the initial sales of Alan Wake 2. The price has stayed high (they didn’t do a retail release, which would have forced them to raise it even higher), and the game has already made back a lot of money in development and marketing costs. They will continue to develop the game to serve the fans while attracting new players, but the expectation is that sales will continue to be good.
Remedy is working on two add-ons. The first Alan Wake 2 DLC will be called Night Springs, which will be released sometime in late spring (so expect it around May). The second is called The Lakehouse, but there is no public release date for it yet.
According to Virtala, they also have two proven franchises in Alan Wake and Control. Both are set in the same world (Remedy’s Connected Universe; roughly the same idea as the Marvel Cinematic Universe), and expanding and growing both franchises will be key for the Finnish studio.
So Remedy Entertainment will soon see a profit from Alan Wake 2, published (and financed) by Epic Games Publishing for PlayStation 5, Xbox series and PC (Epic Games Store), which will put the Finnish studio in a much better position than People Can Fly, who worked on Outriders in vain because they still haven’t received any royalties from Square Enix!
