Baldur’s Gate 3 Is Getting A Sequel, But Could It Be Too Early To Rejoice?!

Baldur’s Gate 3 is getting a sequel after all, according to Dungeons and Dragons’ parent company, Hasbro, but fans should know there’s a catch…

Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast are moving forward with plans for a Baldur’s Gate 3 sequel. The news comes after it was revealed that BG3 developer Larian Studios would withdraw from the series after the award-winning game’s release.

Baldur’s Gate 3 took the gaming world by storm upon its release, and almost a quarter of a century later, it followed the massive success of its predecessor.

Many players have been impatiently waiting for news from Larian Studios about the sequel. However, they were surprised and disappointed to learn that BG3 is not getting any DLC or expansions. Moreover, Larian Studios announced that they would not be continuing the series. So, a supposed Baldur’s Gate 4 is not coming from the studio either.

In an interview with PC Gamer, D&D owner Hasbro revealed that it will eventually get a sequel to Baldur’s Gate 3. Even without Larian Studios. The company is currently investigating the case. However, Eugene Evans, Senior Vice President of Digital Strategy and Licensing, noted that it is still in its extremely early stages. The company is currently investigating potential partners to develop the game, but Evans indicates that it may be a long time before a sequel is realized.

…We’re going to take our time and find the right partner, the right approach, and the right product that could represent the future of Baldur’s Gate.”

“We take that very, very seriously, as we do with all of our decisions around our portfolio. We don’t rush into decisions as to who to partner with on products or what products we should be considering.”

Evans specifically states that while the company hopes it won’t be another twenty-five years before the next game in the franchise comes out, they can’t guarantee anything. Hasbro makes its decision carefully and cautiously. After the massive success of BG3, Hasbro certainly doesn’t want to rush it. At the same time, there is also a high chance that the game’s characters will appear elsewhere. Characters are now owned by Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast rather than Larian Studios. All of this means that memorable companions from BG3 may appear in other Dungeons and Dragons titles in the future. However, nothing is set in stone for now.

Is caution warranted for a Baldur’s Gate 3 sequel?

Baldur’s Gate 3 was a huge success for both Hasbro and Larian Studios. The game set records for game prizes won. While there are certainly fans who would love nothing more than to return to the game’s universe immediately, Hasbro probably made the right choice. A rushed game would undoubtedly disappoint the fans. After the meticulous care of the development of the title, players expect a lot from the sequel.
