Newzoo derived the top list from data from six major markets, and there are a few surprises, although on reflection the position of some games seems perfectly understandable.
Newzoo took data from the US, UK, Germany, France, Spain, and Italy, and the company’s data covers both game purchases (“premium” titles) and in-game spending (microtransactions). But let’s take a look at the top 10, which includes all PC and console titles:
1. Fortnite
2. EA Sports FC 24
3. Helldivers 2
4. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II/III / Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0
5. NBA 2K24
6. Madden NFL 24
7. Dragon’s Dogma II
8. Palworld
9. Valorant
10. Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Siege
Epic Games’ battle royale game accounted for more than 10% of total revenue in the first month of 2024, which is a great result. EA Sports FC 24 reached 8.3%, and that percentage gets much lower as you move down the list, with Rainbow Six: Siege, released in 2015, at just 1.6%. That said, there are three sports games on the list, and all three have a ton of microtransactions (Ultimate Team/MyTeam). Fortnite took the top spot among console games, while Helldivers 2 took the top spot on PC, ahead of Palworld.
The top 10 list of games released in 2024 was also released:
1. Helldivers 2
2. Dragon’s Dogma II
3. Palworld
4. WWE 2K24
5. Persona 3 Reload
6. Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League
7. Tekken 8
8. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth
9. Skull And Bones
10. MLB The Show 24
Rocksteady’s Live Service game finally makes an appearance on a list, and the results for Tekken 8 and especially Final Fantasy VII Rebirth are surprisingly poor (sales of the latter are not very good, we’ve heard that from several places), and Ubisoft’s game is also surprising to make it to ninth place.
According to Newzoo, the international games industry will generate $184 billion in 2023, up 0.6% from 2022 (which was down -5% from 2021). They think that in 2024 it will be 189.3 billion and in 2026 it will be 205.7 billion.
