As the debate rages over the use of artificial intelligence in filmmaking, it has emerged that artificial intelligence technology was used to blend the faces of stars Anya Taylor-Joy and Alyla Browne in George Miller’s recent production of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. Browne plays the younger version of the title character, while Taylor-Joy plays the adult protagonist after a time jump in the film. Appearing on The Kelly Clarkson Show (via Variety ), Taylor-Joy said the idea of ​​using AI came to director George Miller “very early on.”

She said this was necessary because he wanted to create a “seamless transition” between her and Browne as the film progressed. As the actress put it:

“George Miller had the idea very early on. The audience was already getting used to a new Furiosa [Charlize Theron in Fury Road]. He wanted the transition from both actors playing her to be seamless. And so I did two days of the craziest things you could ever possibly imagine. And they mixed our faces together.”

While Taylor-Joy didn’t elaborate on what her “craziest things” were, she did mention that at the beginning of Furiosa, roughly 35% of her appearances were mixed with Alyla Browne. By the time the film is ready to jump between the two, it’s about 80% Taylor-Joy and 20% Browne. “It’s amazing to see,” she remarked.

Acknowledging that artificial intelligence in filmmaking has been a growing issue recently, Taylor-Joy goes on to say that it’s “something scary” and that when used in the production process, it should be “consensual.”

She says this is why the industry has called for strike action in 2023.

“There’s a reason that our industry went on strike. It is something that is frightening, and I think if you’re going to use it you have to be honest about it and it always has to be consensual. It’s the lack of consent in anything in life that is the scary thing.”

While Furiosa: The Mad Max Saga is just the latest film to successfully use artificial intelligence, there are more films in the works that will continue to experiment with the technology. Among them is the upcoming Here, Robert Zemeckis’ film starring Tom Hanks and Robin Wright.
