While the Japanese company has been trying to bring back several IPs, it hasn’t released many details in the past six months, and an insider who specializes in SEGA can help with that.
SEGA announced at The Game Awards 2023 that it is planning several remakes of its older franchises. The franchises in question are Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, Shinobi, Streets of Rage, and Golden Axe. Unfortunately, no further details have been released by the company, but there have been several leaks since then, most of which have been made by Midori (who has been leaking not only SEGA/Atlus games lately, but also Square Enix titles, which is why his name was mentioned in today’s news).
“I want to make sure there is no confusion with what I said earlier. It is correct information that SEGA is developing full remakes of Crazy Taxi and Jet Set Radio in Unreal Engine 5 with most of the original staff. These titles would be released before the GaaS (game-as-a-service) reboots. These remakes are very similar to the original games, but with some new features, including multiplayer for Crazy Taxi. And day one cosmetic DLC is currently planned for the remakes. But there are no expansion packs currently planned. These are not the GaaS reboot titles.
Internally, both the Jet Set Radio and Crazy Taxi plans have already been delayed twice, including the original reveal dates for the projects. The previous plan before this month was to release the Jet Set Radio remake and reboot in 2026 and Crazy Taxi in 2027. Golden Axe was supposed to be released individually in 2023 and marketing plans were created, but that plan was then changed. The developer of the Jet Set Radio remaster was working on a project for another developer. So the plan changed and it is Remake first and Reboot after in the same year. The Remake titles are being developed internally at SEGA in Unreal Engine 5 with most of the original staff. These are full price remakes that are very similar to the original but with small changes. The Crazy Taxi remake would have local multiplayer,” Midori wrote.
