According to a reliable insider, NetherRealm Studios isn’t making the usual 1v1 brawler right now, but is taking a break to do something else.
On Twitter, V Scooper wrote that Ed Boon is supposedly planning to make an action-adventure game mode or even a full game with one of his IPs. The leaker thinks it will be for Mortal Kombat, but Injustice can’t be ruled out with 100% certainty, and he says that in time we’ll see which IP NetherRealm Studios ultimately chooses.
Ed Boon has expressed this desire on Twitter before. In February 2023, he wrote that they also enjoyed Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks and wished they could make another game like it, or maybe remaster Shaolin Monks. He then added that it was originally a single player project with Raiden as the main character. Maybe Warner Bros. Discovery, the owner of the studio, listened to Boon’s wishes and gave the go-ahead for development, and in the year since, something playable might have emerged, which is why the rumors about this might have surfaced.
Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks was released for PlayStation 2 and Xbox in September 2005 (no PC port or GameCube version was made), and it’s only fans of the franchise who will remember the co-op game, which featured Kung Lao, Liu Kang, Sub-Zero and Scorpion as the four main playable characters. There was also a versus mode that added more characters to the roster. Considering that Shaolin Monks was a huge success at the time, it’s no wonder that NetherRealm Studios is looking in that direction.
But the rumor also mentioned Injustice. So it’s not out of the question that something similar could be done with characters from the DC Comics universe, and there could be potential there. Considering that Injustice was last released in 2017, it’s been seven years, and maybe the studio could look into it.
None of this is official though.
