This Pirate Fantasy RPG Is Like The Lovechild Of AC Black Flag And Fable! [VIDEO]

Assassin’s Creed Black Flag meets Fable in this awesome new RPG…

As part of the Summer Game Fest, one of Amazon’s upcoming novelties, New World: Aeternum, was presented. It’s a new iteration of the company’s New World online RPG, featuring an interesting story, decent combat, and an open world full of likeable characters and mysteries to solve. (Watch the game trailer below!)

After an admittedly lacklustre opening that teaches you how to control the game aboard an exploding ship, the game drops you off in Aeternum, a kind of afterlife where, if you die, you’re instantly brought back to life, sometimes perfectly fine.

Some seem to come back “bad”, as a kind of zombie, with only the instinct to attack. Unfortunately, this is what happened to the crew, including the captain, who is controlled by an unseen force that brings chaos to the lands.

Starting with choosing your character, you can customize your appearance as well as what class you want to belong to. This determines the weapons and other equipment you start with. You get a melee weapon and a ranged weapon, ranging from fantasy magical items to various 17th-18th century blunderbusses.

Exciting combat, open RPG world

Over time, the combat can feel a bit repetitive, but you can spice it up with the in-game skill tree. This provides upgrades to your current abilities as well as unlocking new ones. For example, massive sword strikes or different effects for your ranged weapon. There were quite a few to choose from, although, of course, many of them are locked behind a certain level so that you are not too strong at the beginning.

But what about Aeternum itself? It’s quite beautiful, you have to leave it. It’s basically a huge island full of wild beasts and the aforementioned angry possessed corpses. As well as a mysterious energy that is apparently the source of the disturbance.

Meeting some characters who had been there for a while gave me a better feel for the area, as well as additional guidance for things like hunting, crafting, and taking on quests.

Moreover, one is not alone on the road. Because you can see other players wandering around the same island. Of course, they did things differently depending on where they were in the game.

New World: Aeternum RPG

At the same time, it is essential to mention that the game does not force you to interact. Players can help each other, but whoever wants to can focus entirely on the solo experience.

In terms of progression, it’s like any other RPG: you defeat bad guys, level up your character, and unlock tons of chests filled with goodies like new weapons, armour, and more.

The variety of enemies and the fights can feel a little repetitive towards the end of the tryable gameplay. At the same time, this can be assumed to be only because we can get a glimpse of a relatively early stage of the game’s history.

New World: Aeternum will be released on October 15 this year for Xbox, PlayStation and PC platforms.
